Instructors

Darla Campbell

tânisi,

I come from a nursing background and have been developing my love of hide tanning throughout the years. I've traveled across Canada learning and sharing hide techniques. There is still a lot to learn and there are always teachings. Every hide is different. The tools used, the skinning, fleshing, scraping and so on. Our fall hide camps and spring hide camps are times of change. Weather is changing and we are either getting ready to make clothes to keep us warm or we are making beautful footwear, vests and regalia for our children and love ones. Please come and share this space with us.

ôta ohci nîya. mistahi atoskêwin mâka miywâsin ka-waskawê mîna ka-sîsâwê. I'm from Ministikwan Lake and have taught over 30 years. Since we started learning how to tan hides, the hides have been teaching us how amazing our relatives were. Their resilience and their strength was worn on their bodies. Their strong arms and legs were wrapped with love from these hides and animals. There is so much teaching in hide tanning. The knowledge was lost in our community but we researched, we asked, we traveled to find out how to tan the different hides. Moose, deer, antelope, caribou, buffalo and elk have been tanned at our camps. These are all different types of hides. We continue to learn and share as much as we can. We look forward to having hide tanners join us at our gatherings.
